The Doxology

The Doxology of the Lord’s prayer.

“For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen”

We regularly celebrate the Communion with the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer because Jesus instructed us to pray this way. The prayer can be found in the Gospel of Matthew as well as the Gospel of Luke.

The end of the prayer ends with the doxology which is a praise or hymn to the Lord. It can be found in the King James version of the Bible but not in the NIV, English Standard version, RSV or any modern version of the Bible.

The King James version of the Bible used the “Textus Receptus” or “Received Text” for its source of the Greek New Testament which was written in 1516 and used documents dating to 1100 AD. Modern scholars use ancient papyrus writings dating to about 200 AD and they do not include the doxology. There is evidence that the church added the praise very early in church history but it appears that it was not specified by Jesus in the Gospels.

This praise of the Lord is beautiful and true to the spirit of the Bible. I am happy to include in in our prayers.
